Therapy options
Diet: Because many common foods (e.g. chocolate, nuts, fruit, fruit juices and wine) contain potassium, the patient must follow a very strict diet which is sometimes hard to maintain.
Dialysis: Dialysis therapy is the first-line action to decrease high potassium levels, but since most potassium is located within cells, potassium removal from blood during dialysis sessions is usually inadequate.
Drugs: To support the organism in reducing the burden of potassium in chronic kidney failure, oral medications - potassium binders - can contribute to the enhancement of gastro-intestinal excretion of potassium.
