The kidneys are high-performing organs with a lot of different functions in the human body. Amongst others the healthy kidneys regulate the blood concentration of two important minerals: phosphate and potassium.
In renal failure the kidneys are no longer able to keep phosphate as well as potassium in balance. In consequence the kidney patient develops hyperphosphataemia (abnormally elevated levels of phosphate in the blood) and hyperkalaemia (abnormally elevated levels of potassium in the blood) - serious conditions that have to be treated.
